The Joy Jacket by Chalk and Notch

joy group shot.jpg

The Joy Jacket is a beautiful pattern, but it’s also so much more than that! This pattern was drafted in memory of Emily’s Mother. If you haven’t heard the whole story about why the Joy Jacket was created, go read about it on Leslie’s Blog today. And bring a tissue!Emily2.jpg

“I’m so honored that she took on the challenge of making this special pattern and even more honored that she named it after my sweet mom, Joy. I can’t wait for this pattern to get into the sewing world’s hands. I hope you all love it as much as I do!”

Outerwear can be challenging, and many sewists shy away from it. But fear not!! Chalk and Notch has the best step by step instructions that take this sew from challenging to totally manageable. You CAN make this!

Fabric – Rayon Twill from LA Fabric District

I think for me the hardest part was sourcing all the supplies! I found this rayon twill for $1.99 in downtown LA, but it’s AWFUL! I didn’t realize at the time, but it’s cheap and already snagging enough to make any girl cry. So I’m already on the hunt for better quality Rayon or Tencel Twill.

Here’s a few fabric sources I’m excited to try out next time!

Black Bird Fabrics

Raspberry Creek Fabrics

IndieSew coming soon

Style Maker Fabrics

Fashion Fabrics the cheapest!

I used a Rayon fabric for my body lining, and a non stretch suit lining for the sleeve linings. Next time I’ll definitely use a Rayon fabric to line everything.

I used size Large Eyelets – Dritz brand from Joann.

Alterations: I used a 29 inch zipper and added 2 inches in body length for my height. 1 inch added for sleeves. I also added the pockets on after my zipper was in, to make sure they matched perfectly.

This Jacket is PERFECT for spring and late summer nights! It’s casual and buttery soft. I’m already planning my next one. Don’t hesitate to try the Joy Jacket, you are going to love it!

  1. I can’t believe your jacket is snagging! It looks flawless in your photos, but I guess it’s an excuse to make another Joy!

  2. I’m sorry to hear about the snagging, but your jacket does look really good in the photos! Your lining is so pretty! And that’s a great tip about the pockets – I’m going to keep that in mind when I (finally) get around to making my Joy!
